Protections for 2018

Postby ProfPoobah » Tue Dec 19, 2017 9:40 pm

So, after being Gurley Browned (not the right group to get that one, but I digress) out of the playoffs, I need to decide on who to protect on my team, by the week after the Super Bowl. However, the chat boards, fairly quiet as they are, will go into hibernation before then. Hence, please project a little now. We choose our keepers from these 10 in August, but can trade them after we declare protections.

.5 PPR scoring, start QB/2RB/3WR/TE/K/D - auction league, $200 cap, prices shown are 2018 values. I've run off the kicker, and my high-priced waiver pickup that actually helped a lot (thanks, Jamaal Williams!) but could not in anyway be a keeper at his price ($39). Leaves just a little bit of paring down to do -- whose my best 10?

QB - Mariota ($14) - kinda regressed this year, would only be worth it to me at this price if he had top-6 upside. Not seeing it.
Luck ($8) - Other than TY Hilton, who really loves Andrew Luck? At least, at this price? Maybe me...
Foles ($9) - Great game last week, still under contract as a backup next year, right? Unless Wentz isn't healed in time...

RB - Freeman ($22) - Lock #1
D. Cook ($22) - Lock #2 - original owner cut him after the injury, and I won the bid. Liking the 1-2 punch
Hyde ($30) - like the player, hate the price tag. Trade bait?
Montgomery ($11) - loved him enough to trade for him after his first injury. Of course, now who knows what the deal will be? RBBC?
Barber ($11) - Martin being a healthy scratch last night made this a lot more interesting to me
K. Williams ($10) - unless he gets traded or David Johnson unexpectedly retires, no...

WR - Brown ($36) - Lock #3 - getting to the high end of where I want him, but he's just been so good for so long
Diggs ($16) - Great start with Bradford, mediocre with Keenum, and who the hell knows about Bridgewater?
Funchess ($11) - Lock #4 - Didn't he just shock everyone? He's been the #15 WR since Benjamin was traded.
Coleman ($10) - Boy, have his numbers fluctuated since Gordon came back. Besides, who knows who will throw it to him next year?
Goodwin ($7) - Dare I say it? Lock #5? low-end #2 WR over the last two months, even better with Jimmy G.
Meredith ($6) - Lock #6? A flyer, admittedly, but it could pay off, and it's a cheap gamble

TE - Henry ($8) - Lock #7? I feel like he turned a corner the last few weeks for me. Naturally, he then got injured, but...

D - Jacksonville ($7) - I know, I know. Continuance year-to-year on defense is almost a myth. But the idea of potentially getting 12 points a game?

Here's who I protect for now:
1. Freeman
2. Cook
3. Brown
4. Funchess
5. Diggs - this guy is a very good WR that get's dinged up...I would hold on to him for now and take a closer look in Aug.
6. Goodwin - this guy just might be proving himself to be super valuable in Shannahan's offense.
7. Henry - Gates has to retire right?????
8. Jax D - I know it's crazy - but we are talking about a legit def for years to come. They are young and have the core players under contract next year.
9. Meredith - you are right...cheap flier
10. Hyde - I guess would be my last one. I agree the price is pretty high but he is a FA this offseason, who knows where he goes.

If you didn't want Hyde because of the price, then I think I would protect Luck next. You can see how he is progressing before actually keeping him in Aug.

I think I would go Luck over Hyde, but otherwise I agree with the above.
