Opinion on Keeper League

Postby zss1 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 11:21 pm

1/2 our owners want to have a keeper. I keep telling them that those who have been in one don't like it. One of my leagues has one and I don't fancy it. I personally like to start fresh.

What are your opinions or pros/cons?

Thanks, ZZ

Keeper leagues work best when there is:

1) A consistent group of owners in the league year after year
2) Conditions for making a player more expensive to own (round or $$ escalation)

Just one opinion here...

Mine is a keeper league - we can keep either one or two. If keep just one, you draft in a provisional round before everyone else starts up

Pros - rewards those who look long range, awesome when you lock up a player like Megatron, provides a way to set up draft day trades (I've traded good players on my roster to those needing a "keeper" in exchange for draft slots)

Cons - thins out the drafting pool, sucks when someone else has AP and McCoy as their keepers

One thing we do, is combine it with an NFL ladder style draft rather than regular snake draft.

I got into keeper leagues because I consistently had guys from last years roster go off in the current year. :D

I'm in 2 now and would love to do a full blown dynasty some day.

I agree, you need a consistent group of owners.

I'm not a fan of keeper leagues.

Not at all.

Redraft or Dynasty.
That's my style.

I love keeper leagues as they extend the season. There is always stuff to look at. If you're out of it early you care about trading for keepers or playing for draft position depending on league rules. You also have the preseason to start talking trades and stuff.

For them to work you need:

good group of owners that stick around.
a clearly written set of rules to cover things like the inevitable guy not sticking around, shady trades, etc...
Something to keep people playing late. Draft position incentives stuff of that nature

I don't think they are better or worse. I love re drafts too. If you are one of those that play multiple leagues I say definitely give one a try. If you're a one league person, prob best stick to redraft.
